Anger Management: What Prisoners Can Teach Us About Inner Peace

By  |

CJ talks to Christian Conte, PHD, about his book “Walking through Anger.” Listen in as CJ and Christian cover the basics on anger management: What is anger and why is it considered a universal or primary emotion? Then, they will dive into Christian’s work as a Level 5 Specialist. Christian has worked with serial rapists, murderers and people who will likely never leave prison. Currently, 70% of prisoners return to prison. Christian explains that most hardened criminals have a mindset that is passed down to newer inmates, causing harm. His focus is to change mindsets and behaviors of those who are in prison for life. This helps them become positive role models for change to other prisoners just entering the prison system. His focus is on helping them gain inner peace, personal growth, and a positive legacy. These help to create a ripple effect.

Christian gives an overview of his Yield Theory, which he has been using since the 1990’s to work with inmates. This process is based on meeting people where they are at, without judgement. They focus not on the past, but on the future and it’s possibilities. Christian shares a story of an inmate that touched his heart, and taught him the true meaning of the ripple effect and taking the time to listen without judgement. Christian, a Zen Buddhist, describes his belief system that we are all connected. He shares a recent dream where he viscerally knows how the universe and people are all interconnected.
