Fire Season: Self-Reliance // Part 2

By  |

CJ interviews actor and author Robert Kerbeck about his book “Malibu Burning.” In November 2016, The Woolsey Fire hit Malibu, burning down 96,949 acres, as well as 400 single-family homes. This caused an estimated market value loss of at least $1.6 billion.

In this 2 part interview, Robert shares his community’s experience. This includes the importance of taking preventative measures for any natural disaster.

In Part 2, Robert first shares the tough decisions that he and his wife had to make. When were they going to respond to fire warnings and pack the car? What should they pack? In this case, they left right before a fire tornado was seen hitting their neighborhood. Robert shares the devastating impact of the fire with homes burnt down, and cars and appliances melted to the ground. They faced not only a traumatic loss, but that trauma being compounded by the aftermath.

Next, CJ and Robert discuss what that looks like, including:

  • Cleaning out house sites filled with toxins.
  • Neighbors with under-insured homes.
  • Most of his neighbors living in trailer homes as they wait for construction of their new house.
  • Most conversations still center around this tragedy with many of its residents suffering from the loss on multiple levels.
