C.J. Liu interviews authors Diane Hartingh Price & Susan Ives McCollum about “Write Your Stress Away: Tame the Tension in Your Life.”

Heal Your Emotional Blocks via Writing

Diane explains that stress, whether an unconscious undercurrent in your life or a rampage of emotions, can make you sick if you don’t manage it. Susan shares the research around stress.

Everyday stress poses major health risks and is considered to be linked to the six leading causes of death in the United States. But as the authors found through their work and the research on the subject from James Pennebaker, writing heals. Based on Pennebaker’s research writing for 20 minutes about your traumatic experiences for three days as an effective means of reducing stress and increasing immunity.

The authors explain that there is a direct correlation between writing and reduced recurrences of certain cancers, lower blood pressure for those with hypertension, strengthened immune function, and better blood glucose management for those living with diabetes. Whether we realize it or not, the body keeps score of our challenging experiences. If we don’t have a healing process, the body holds emotion in the body. Writing is an easy way to allow these emotions to be released. In turn, we experience less stress.

The authors share two stories of how writing helped their clients identify mental and emotional blocks. Susan shares how her client healed through writing after privately writing her feelings about her abusive mother. As a result, her client no longer had to be a “victim.” Diane shares a story about her client who wanted to run a 5k to lose weight. Despite many attempts, it was writing that allowed her to figure out that one of her primary blocks was figuring out what running outfit to wear. Once she figured her outfit, she’s been off to many 5k races.
